A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
